So called generic top level domains (".com", ".net", ".org", ".biz", ".info") operate alongside national top level domains, and are the most reliable and easiest way for information to reach its global audience. These top level domains usually have an ending which is descriptive of the owner’s activities (.COM = COMmercial, .ORG=ORGanization, etc.). The most popular and well-known of the generic top level domains are ".com", ".net" and ".org", whereas more recent top level domains include ".biz" and ".info" and ".mobi" for mobile devices. Registration of generic top level domains is applied for from the service providers administering the top level domains.
