Design Rights in General
Registration of designs protects the appearance of a product or part thereof. Also an integral part of an object, such as a flower in a fabric, may be protected. Protection can only be obtained for the external appearance of concrete, visible objects. Subject to certain exceptions, design rights guarantee an exclusive right to commercial exploitation of the protected product, with the objective of thus encouraging design and investment in the results of design.
