    Night Work

Night work is work undertaken between the hours of 11pm and 6am. If an employee’s shift takes place only partly during these hours, that part is still regarded as night work and is subject to night work restrictions.

Night work may be undertaken regularly but only in respect of specific work mentioned in the Working Hours Act. Night work is acceptable for instance for period-based work, shift work, necessary maintenance and repair work to maintain the working of the employer’s operation, general road, street, other traffic route’s maintenance and sanitation work as well as work in pharmacies. According to the Working Hours Act, there are restrictions only for regular night work, so occasional night work can be done in all fields and at all possible working hours. For instance, this could mean that the employees have to exceptionally work at night time or due to an urgent order.

An employer is under an obligation to inform the occupational safety and health authority upon request of any night work undertaken on a regular basis.
