    Building Ordinance

The building ordinance is an instrument for building guidance under the regulative power of the municipality. The building ordinance includes regulations and instructions on locally eligible building. The building ordinance regulations may concern construction sites, the size and location of buildings, a building's suitability for its surroundings, the method of construction, planting, fences and other structures, management of the built environment, organization of water supply and drainage and definition of areas requiring planning.

According to law each municipality must have its own building ordinance whose orders must be obeyed throughout the municipality’s region.  The regulations of a building ordinance are not applied when a legally binding local master plan, a local detailed plan or the Finnish Building Code stipulate otherwise.

The municipality’s building ordinance may be collected from the municipality in question and it is usually available in digital form on the website of the municipality.
